Internship Background

TREEM is a Ecommerce sustainable jewellery startup steeped in Nordic heritage and focused on empowering customers. When I was hired on, I was tasked with improving the websites and brands of both Treem and their sister company, Thor of Sweden.

Goals and Objectives

With TREEM in a very young phase of it's life, many of it's goals were broad and dynamic but centered around the main idea of growth and improving conversion rates. My first day(and weeks after that) was spent really trying to put myself in the shoes of the brand and identify problems that we could solve over the course of my internship. We created a list of ideas and tasks I wanted to accomplish during my time there and I immediately got to work. This list included problem areas such as:

1. Improving Site Speed
2. Researching A/B Testing
3. Moving away from default Woocommerce and theme functionality
4. Regaining abandoned cart users
5. Strengthening both brands' identities and visual aesthetics

Creative Strategies

After identifying some of the main problems, I set out to research and break down my problems into smaller ones which could be broken down into steps, such as adding a new checkout experience that would lead the user through the checkout process better than Woocommerce's default checkout, integrating Mailchimp to design abandoned cart campaigns that wasn't just text, and having team meetings to decide on specific rules for Thor of Sweden and TREEM's aesthetic and putting that into a Design Manual.

Summary

I was proud to be a part of this team and to feel like I made a difference for TREEM and it's sustainable efforts. During my time with the company, we built a UX design team and began having open discussions about User needs and gathering feedback which I helped spearhead. My one key takeaway: When faced with many different and dynamic areas to focus on, I learned that my experience across multiple disciplines was userful and I was able to apply my knowledge throughout my internship.
